Nibbles and wine are a well-documented pastime. Cheese, crackers, antipasto, chips, nuts… all spectacular partners for grape-based beverages. Ever considered popcorn, though? A crunchy, light, high-flavour (and healthy-ish snack), that presents in salty, sweet, sour and bitter iterations. Married with the right wine, you have yourself the ultimate combo. Here’s a word on which this to pair with that.
Buttered, Salted Popcorn + Chardonnay
A wise man once said, “there is no better way to cut through an oily, salty snack than a fresh white wine with stone fruit aromas and melon notes, balanced by crisp acidity and lengthy finish.” No-one has ever said that before, and that quote is entirely fake. Nevertheless, we’re saying so, because it’s true. Those exact flavours happen to be displayed in this here Chardonnay by Krondorf.
Coriander + Lime Popcorn + Sauvignon Blanc

This fresh flavour matches neatly with a Sauvignon Blanc—particularly one from New Zealand. The herbaceous tones in a Sav B are an ideal complement to the botanical, zippy flavours in the popcorn.
For the edible element, melt 4 tablespoons of butter and stir in the juice and zest of one lime and ½ a cup of fresh coriander. Pour over a fresh batch of popcorn along with a few pinches of sea salt and shake to combine.
Truffle Popcorn + Pinot Noir

Truffle oil is usually reserved for fancy restaurants and mood lighting. Nolonger! A small dash of truffle oil and a few pinches of salt are all you need to turn plain popcorn into a decadent couch session. Pair the earthy umami flavours with a Pinot Noir like Mother In Law; a bouquet of savoury character with a lengthy finish.
Cinnamon Sugar Popcorn + Sparkling

A little dusting of cinnamon sugar is all your popcorn needs to become the perfect partner for an effervescent wine, like a champagne or zesty Prosecco. If you’re feeling bougie, may we direct your attention to the classic French fave, Moët? (Fun fact: The underground Moët & Chandon cellars are the most extensive in the Champagne region, extending more than 28 kilometres). If the mood is less fancy, this spritely Moscato by Tempus Two is also an excellent choice.
